The New Choices Program is a program designed to help displaced homemakers gain the skills they need to enter or re-enter the workforce. A Displaced Homemaker is a person who has been financially dependent on a spouse, significant other, or government assistance while working primarily in the home. The homemaker may have had part-time employment or occasional full-time employment, but did not pursue permanent, full-time employment of their own. For a variety of reasons (death, divorce, separation, ineligibility for federal assistance), that support becomes unavailable and the individual must gain skills to survive and support their families on their own.
Services Provided: Job Counseling, Information about Employment, Interview Tips and Mock Interviews, Resume Writing Assistance, Educational Services, Housing Resources, Child Care Resources, and 11 week group sessions.
Workshops are offered to participants in the New Choices program. The workshops are designed to equip participants with the skills and abilities they need to survive in today’s world. Group members are encouraged to share information and personal experiences with the group.
The 11 workshops are: Introduction, Assertiveness, Personal Health, Nutrition, Money Management, Child Management, Self Advocacy, Legal Rights, Coping with Crisis, Community Resources, Employment and Education.
The workshops will be held on Tuesdays at 10:00am and on Thursdays at 6:30pm. All workshops will be approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes long. The Tuesday groups will begin March 4 and the Thursday groups will begin March 6. If you are interested please contact Mary Arant for more information.
